Spring is coming soon, but for many of us, we still have some cold nights ahead of us. This time of year I always try to make my favorite cold weather foods like soups, breads, and warm treats before Spring officially blows in. Here's one my family loves that's easy to make, tastes oh-so decadent, but is a great source of fiber and protein.

This Sunday I'll be celebrating the Academy Awards in style at an Oscars party. Besides a large spread of food, my friend — who is hosting the party — is supplying each guest a bag of popcorn. Since most people love having popcorn while watching movies, it's the perfect snack for celebrating the film industry.

Here's a quick snack I love to nosh on in the late afternoon before a long hike or bike ride or after a run. It's filling, packed with protein, and tastes sweet enough to feel like a treat. If you're a peanut butter fanatic, you're going to love this simple and nutty snack.

Hummus has always been a staple snack for all my parties, but since it's so popular, it can get boring. Here's a twist on that basic recipe. You'll find this version is slightly creamier since it's made with Greek yogurt, and the dill gives it a fresh, zippy flavor.

My first experience with kale chips was at Blue Hill New York — the highly respected farm-to-table restaurant owned by James Beard winner, executive chef Dan Barber. I was in heaven when I tried the first bite: light, crispy, and nutty, with the perfect amount of salt to complement the subtle taste of kale. The chips were a goner in less than a minute.

I've been hearing a lot of buzz around MixMyGranola (starting at $5 for 16 oz.). Stylist Rachel Zoe and granola lovin' Whitney Port are among its fans, and it was recently mentioned in the New York Times. MixMyGranola allows customers to create their own granola or muesli mix via its website.

If you find that it's hard for you to fall asleep in the evening or that you wake up in the middle of the night, a small adjustment to your diet may be in order. While some foods make it harder to get a good night's rest — think high fat, spicy, and caffeine — others may actually help. If you're a restless sleeper, try eating any of these foods a few hours before bedtime and be ready for a personal visit from Mr. Sandman.

An easy way to get healthy this year is resolving to bring your own lunch. By doing so, you know exactly what's going into your meal — not the case when eating out. Even something that seems healthy like a takeout salad can be full of hidden calories.

The importance of eating a healthy breakfast everyday is pretty well known in these parts, and having a bowl of steel cut oats definitely fulfills this requirement. Steel cut oats are a great way to fuel up in the morning because they are high in fiber, protein, and calcium. They also keep you full until lunch, which is helpful when trying to avoid that mid-morning crash.
